Short answer: the old “multiply by 7” rule is wrong. A dog’s first year equals roughly 15 human years, the second adds about 9, and each year after that adds 4 to 7 human years depending on size. Small dogs age more slowly in later life than large and giant breeds. Use the calculator below to get an estimate in seconds.
Dog age calculator
This calculator gives an estimate for curiosity and planning. It does not replace a check-up with your veterinarian.
How does the dog age calculator work?
It uses a widely used size-based approximation:
- Year 1: about 15 human years (a puppy reaches puberty and most of its growth).
- Year 2: about 9 more human years, so a 2-year-old dog is roughly 24.
- Each year after 2: add 4 (small), 5 (medium), 6 (large) or 7 (giant) human years.
Example: a 6-year-old Labrador Retriever (large) = 24 + (6 - 2) x 6 = 48 human years. A 6-year-old Chihuahua (small) = 24 + 4 x 4 = 40 human years.
Is one dog year really 7 human years?
No. The 7-year rule is a myth based on average lifespans. Dogs mature very fast in the first two years, then slow down. A 1-year-old dog can already reproduce, which a 7-year-old child cannot.
Why do big dogs age faster than small dogs?
Large and giant breeds grow very fast and tend to have shorter lifespans. A Great Dane or Bernese Mountain Dog is often considered senior around 5 to 6 years old, while a Yorkshire Terrier, Dachshund or Shih Tzu may not show senior signs until 8 to 10.

Mixed breed? Use the adult weight, not the look.
What about the DNA-based formula?
Researchers have proposed an epigenetic formula based on changes in dog DNA: human age = 16 x ln(dog age) + 31. It was built mainly from Labrador Retrievers, so it is less reliable for very small or giant dogs. The size-based method above is easier to use day to day.
When is my dog a puppy, adult or senior?
- Puppy: birth to about 1 year. Expect teething and nipping (see how to stop a puppy from biting).
- Young adult: 1 to 2 years. Energy is high, training habits settle.
- Adult: from 2 years until the senior stage.
- Senior: around 8 to 10 for small dogs, 7 for medium, 6 for large and 5 for giant breeds.
Why does my dog's age in human years matter?
Food
Puppies, adults and seniors have different calorie and nutrient needs. Diet changes should be gradual to avoid an upset stomach (read our guide on dog diarrhea and what to feed).
Vet visits
Many vets suggest a yearly exam for adults and more frequent checks for seniors, because a "year" for a dog is several years of human aging.
Medication and supplements
Older dogs often take long-term medication. Always buy from trusted sources and stay informed about recalls (see what to do about compounded pet medication recalls).
Exercise
A senior dog still needs daily walks, but shorter and gentler ones. Watch for stiffness, panting or lagging behind.
How can I tell my dog's age if I don't know it?
- Teeth: all adult teeth by about 6 to 7 months; tartar and wear increase with age.
- Eyes: a bluish haze in the lens often appears in middle and senior years.
- Coat: grey hair around the muzzle usually starts in mid-life.
- Body: less muscle, more stiffness and slower recovery after walks.
A vet can give a closer estimate during a physical exam.
FAQ
How old is a 1-year-old dog in human years?
About 15 human years, whatever the size.

What is the oldest age for a dog?
Many small dogs live 13 to 16 years, while giant breeds often live 7 to 10 years. Genetics, weight and care all play a role.
